When We're Running Out of Hope, God is at Work - Isaiah 43:19-21; Matthew 11:1-11 - Second Sunday of Advent

In “When We’re Running Out of Hope, God Is at Work,” Rev. Betsey Moe reflects on Matthew 11:1–11, where a discouraged, imprisoned John the Baptist asks Jesus if He truly is the Messiah. She connects John’s crisis of faith—and the early church’s similar struggles—to the sense of hopelessness many feel today amid social division, global conflict, economic inequality, and mental health challenges. Jesus’ response—a list of healings and good news for the poor—shows that even when personal suffering isn’t removed, God’s Kingdom is already breaking in, especially among the marginalized. Rev. Moe illustrates this through a local story of resilience and new beginnings at a restaurant called Gathered, born out of its owner’s painful experience with workplace injustice, as well as a simple act of generosity during the COVID-19 toilet paper shortage. She concludes that God is always at work, even when hope feels thin, and calls us to share stories of God’s presence to encourage one another.
