The Tyranny of Mine - Luke 12:13-21;32-34

Pastor Betsey’s sermon “The Tyranny of Mine” uses Jesus’ teaching in Luke 12:13-21 and 32-34 to confront the tyranny of possession, self-centered security, and misplaced trust. Jesus rebukes a man focused on his inheritance dispute by warning the crowd to guard against greed and showing how easily our hearts cling to “mine” — our wealth, plans, comfort, and future — as if these define life and safety. The parable of the rich fool illustrates that storing up earthly treasures for oneself, imagining a secure future apart from God, is folly; life is fleeting, and true wealth is found in being rich toward God rather than in accumulating possessions that can’t save or comfort us beyond this life. Then in verses 32-34, Jesus shifts the focus from worry to trust: instead of fearing lack, believers are invited to trust their generous Father who delights to give the kingdom, urging followers to invest in imperishable treasure — ones that reflect God’s reign and love — because where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. The sermon emphasizes the danger of letting “mine” rule the heart and calls listeners to surrender their security to God’s promises and live generously in service to others and to the kingdom.
